Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs bone density is lost. Bones become weak, and break easily, from falls or in serious cases, sneezing. Under a microscope, healthy bones look like a honeycomb. When osteoporosis occurs, the spaces in the honeycomb are larger than in the healthy bone. There is currently no cure for osteoporosis, but there are preventative methods we all can take. Calcium and vitamin D build bone mass, so gear up with dark green veggies, milk, liver, and fatty fish like salmon or tuna. Weight-bearing exercises are also great for the bones, like aerobics, running, walking, or yoga. Celebrate World Osteoporosis Day on October 20th and incorporate some preventative methods into your daily life.
