“Breaking Chains” was ICJ’s Art as Resistance Gallery theme this year. We wanted the gallery to speak directly to breaking the chains of social injustice that have plagued our nation and our city for decades. Most of the art was received by persons currently incarcerated and serving life sentences, while other pieces were either from formerly incarcerated persons or other individuals who use art “as resistance.” For the first time, we offered visitors to the gallery a chance to bid and own select pieces, with most of the proceeds going to the artist.
We look forward to the gallery growing and expanding and continuing to elevate the voices of those whose voices have been silenced.
