About Val Sowell

Val has been with FIGHT since 2000, in which time she has held at least eight titles in four departments: Project TEACH, Critical Path AIDS Project and the AIDS Library, and the Lax Center, as well as Administration. Currently, she is a Receptionist in the morning and does staff trainings in the afternoon, most notably the New Staff Orientation and HIPAA/Privacy Practices trainings.

Val enjoys that every day is different. “I never know what the day is going to hold, but I love that every day, FIGHT provides concrete and effective help for people to build their own best lives.”

Val earned a BA in English from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and has been certified as a Professional of Human Resources (PHR) since 2015. Val has conducted HIV and LGBTQ trainings across the city, including at homeless shelters, allied health organizations, foster care agencies, MPH classes and more. Most recently she trained the staff of the Bucks County Drugs and Alcohol Commission on building best practices for their trans and gender non-conforming clients.

Val currently is a guest speaker for Project TEACH on the topics “Origins of HIV and the Global AIDS Crisis” and “Research for an HIV Cure”, as well as being a guest speaker for Faithful TEACH on the topic “Spirit, Gender, and a Cure for HIV.”

Val’s interest in HIV started very early in life. “In 1987, I remember arguing with a family member who was misinformed about HIV transmission. I was 10 years old. My commitment to the “fight” goes way back to before I had ever heard of FIGHT.”
