As a visual artist, my primary mediums are painting and drawing. My art draws from a range of themes, with powerful images that confront uncomfortable issues. My intention is to draw the viewer in and make them think without deflecting or turning away due to their own discomfort.

Bio

Jalen A. Law is a professional artist, art educator, and social entrepreneur focused on building a thriving arts scene in Buffalo, New York that can serve as a launching pad for the area’s talented emerging artists. To accomplish this, he founded the nonprofit organization Buffalo’s Own, Inc. in the fall of 2018 with a mission to build a central resource and incubator for artists of all mediums and at all levels to grow their creative careers and build their artistic brands at the local, regional, and national levels. He is also the co-owner and curator of the local art space Urban Art Gallery, established in July of 2019.

In addition to creating, Jalen has been teaching art to people of all ages since 2014, when he was asked to run art workshops for children at a summer camp. He’s also taught art classes at the University of Buffalo Anderson Gallery as well as  designed and delivered workshops on emotional intelligence targeting at-risk youth in Erie County through the Buffalo Urban League, the Salvation Army of Buffalo, the Youth Empowerment & Leadership Program Family Help Center, MBK-Boys and Men of Color Initiative, and Best Self Behavioral Health. His research-based art program, called the Emotional Intelligence Program, equips students with social and emotional tools that will assist them inside and outside of the classroom. Jalen designed the program based on research from Yale University president Dr. Peter Salovey on Emotional Intelligence.

Through his own gallery, Jalen creates custom, commissioned artwork for clients, serves as a live painter for corporate events and festivals, curates art exhibitions in collaboration with a wide range of partners in Buffalo and around the country, and presents live workshops and lectures. His goal is to use art as a vehicle to create opportunities for other up-and-coming artists while also teaching people of all ages to harness the power of art as a tool for personal development.
