Angela Kapalko


Angela has been a clinician at the Lax Center since graduating in 2007. From 2007 to 2017, Angela held the position of Senior Research Coordinator. In 2018, Angela assumed the position of Education Coordinator for APC Students at FIGHT.  Angela is the lead preceptor to PA and NP students at The Lax Center.  Angela is an experienced full-time Physician Assistant specializing in primary care for people living with HIV. Angela has a special interest in chronic comorbidities including diabetes and obesity treatment and management as well as substance use disorder.

Angela is a guest lecturer at multiple Physician Assistant programs throughout Pennsylvania and speaks nationally on topics around HIV healthcare. Angela enjoys the team-based healthcare model, working closely with all staff to assist patients in need. Angela has a passion for caring for and educating an underserved community. Her biggest contribution is to foster the next generation of clinicians to provide patient-centered, evidence-based, and culturally competent medical care for vulnerable and underserved populations.  Angela loves anything health and fitness-based and is an avid Olympic-style weightlifter and long distance runner.

Board Certifications

Angela is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and is licensed by the state of Pennsylvania as a Medical Physician Assistant.

Education & Training

She received a master’s in science in Physician assistant studies from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007. She is also credentialed as an HIV Specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Spotlight On

Karam Mounzer, MD

Dr. Mounzer identified two major gaps in the care of patients with HIV/hepatitis C (HCV) co-infection, and the complexity of multidrug-resistant HIV treatment. He is involved with many clinical trials focusing on drug development and better understanding of HIV immunopathogenesis with the Wistar Institute. He is involved in teaching and mentoring.

Dr. Mario Cruz

Dr. Mario CruzDr. Cruz is a board certified pediatrician who serves as the Medical Director for our Pediatrics and Adolescent Health Center. He has presented and/or published in the fields of community violence and domestic violence prevention, quality improvement, behavioral health, curriculum development and mentorship. In 2019 he received the Greater Philadelphia Social Innovation Award for Innovations in Healthcare.
