Over 200,000 people in the U.S., and over 5,400 people in PA, are currently sentenced to life in prison. This staggering statistic can hide the human stories, especially for men like Tyree Wallace, wrongfully incarcerated since 1997, whose case has been taken up by the PA Innocence Project.

On Friday, we will hear from a myriad of individuals who have been impacted by the MANN UP peer support and empowerment program, both in S.C.I. Phoenix and on the outside. To close out the day, we will hear from the man himself, Tyree Wallace, from behind the walls.

In Tyree’s story and the stories of those he has worked with, we can see the void a lifetime of absence creates, and also the impact people can have if they are only given the chance. All people deserve the right to redemption. We must end the system of mass incarceration that devastates lives and communities in this country.

Tyree Wallace

Co-Founder, MANN UP Association

Tyree is a co-founder and president of the MANN Up! Association and has served the last 23 years behind bars on a life sentence for a wrongful murder conviction. He has been incarcerated since 1997 and is currently represented by the PA Innocence Project, fighting for his release. MANN Up! is a peer support and empowerment group that does work both inside and outside the walls of SCI Phoenix state prison. The organization seeks to prepare prisoners for release and provide support to those serving long-term sentences through a variety of small and large-group therapy sessions, skits, and musical and spoken word performances. Each fifteen-week MANN Up! The session serves 300-400 persons at a time.

Tyree previously founded a chapter of the Pennsylvania Lifer’s Association at SCI-Smithfield Jail and served as its president, sponsoring family forums for inmates serving life sentences, coordinating charitable drives, and promoting a sense of community both inside and outside the institution. Finally, Mr. Wallace served as a founding member of the Unity Team, an inmate group focused on eliminating racial and ethnic divisions within the inmate population. Against adversity, Mr. Wallace has consistently persevered, creating countless opportunities for former and current inmates and the broader Philadelphia community.
