On behalf of ME, MYSELF & I
(Bilingual Workshop- Spanish / English)

This workshop will discuss how language and culture barriers can impact the health of Hispanic and Latinx Americans in a health care setting. We will also examine methods to help advocate for our own physical and mental health, and practice taking control and responsibility of our body by reinforcing the importance of making daily healthy choices, and regularly keeping up with preventive care that can positively impact our overall well-being for us and our family. We will have an opportunity to dismantle rooted stigma and stereotypes that tend to hinder the way the Hispanic and Latinx community feel about medical settings, Doctors, Psychiatrists and/or Physicians. We will examine in open discussion on the history of how medical science have taken advantage of the Hispanic and Latinx community by form of “medication trial participation” and how we overcame these specific circumstances by speaking up, and choosing health care settings that represent the Hispanic and Latinx community as a whole.

Objectives

  1. Participants will learn some of the general reasons on why the Hispanic and Latinx community shy away from health care settings.
  2. Participants will understand where some of the stigma/stereotype of the Latino and Hispanic community regarding Healthcare comes from and how to break free from these stereotypes.
  3. Participants will be able to have the tools to advocate and take charge and responsibility of their physical and mental health in their community.
  4. By the end of this workshop participants will be able to feel empowered and equipped with resources that will assist them in their journey to healthy living
