Community Life Savers Tribute
Open to All: One (1) trophy and $1,000 cash.
The Ballroom scene has many prominent leaders, activist, advocates, researchers, community organizers and educators that work tirelessly to prevent HIV/AIDS in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Tonight, we deem these individuals Community Life Savers; as we salute them for their humanitarian efforts.
Please select one ballroom figure that most inspires you. Then identify where they work and/or have worked, what they’ve done for the community and present them with a Community Life Savers Award. Afterward, you must do a tribute to them by using your individual ballroom talent. You can have up to eight (8) people in your tribute/production; it must not exceed two (2) minutes in duration. We are looking for creativity and excitement and of course… an HIV prevention message.

Mini Grand Prize
Walking in the Name of Robert K. Burns
Open to All Runway: One (1) trophy and $500 cash.
Over the years we have seen it all from wicked, to haute couture, to costumes. Tonight, we are going to walk in memory of the COLOURS Organization’s former Executive Director, Robert K. Burns (Legendary DJ Robbie Rob Blahnik), in executive attire; since this was the category that he walked. You are allowed to add embellishments to your suit to make it fit for ballroom runway. However, his name must be clearly seen on your effect in RED letters. Do your research on this extraordinary Community Life Saver and be prepared to speak his name in remembrance, say something about his life and what he did and/or stood for, to enter the battle zone.
The History: The event was created to serve as a supportive environment for young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons of color to gain information, resources such as access to HIV testing and community building. House/Ballroom culture started in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance, then known as “drag balls” and has a deep-rooted connection in the African American/Latino LGBT community. The HIV Prevention community noticed early on the importance of partnering with the house/ballroom community to address the HIV epidemic that was and continues to impact LGBT communities of color. Events such as Gay Men’s Health Crisis’ (GMHC) Latex Balls laid the found for organizations to create free HIV Prevention Awareness balls to further create awareness, HIV/STD testing and other health-related resources to an often marginalized community.
